SEO or paid search: which should your business choose?

Compare timing, costs, demand and enquiry quality. When to use paid search, when to develop organic search and how to combine them.

The short answer. Paid search can help test an offer and bring paid visits once a campaign is set up and approved. SEO develops your presence in organic search, but takes time and does not guarantee rankings. Your choice depends on demand, budget, landing page readiness and customer acquisition cost. Many businesses benefit from using both.

When to start with paid search

Consider it when you need to test a specific offer, a suitable advertising channel is available, your landing page works and you can fund the test. Start with one service and region. Track form submissions and make sure someone handles the enquiries. Before launching, agree what makes a qualified lead and what your business can afford to pay to acquire one. Advertising cannot fix unavailable products, an unclear quotation process or enquiries that never reach the sales team.

When organic search is worth developing

When buyers regularly search for your products, services, specifications or answers, and your business can explain them well. An equipment supplier may need pages about models, compatibility and delivery terms. A local service may need to explain customer problems, service areas and diagnostics. The useful articles are those that help a reader decide whether your service fits their needs.

A visit without a per-click charge is not the same as free acquisition. Website work and content have a cost. Include those expenses when comparing channels rather than looking only at the ad account.

How to compare channels using your own data

  1. Choose comparable services, regions and observation periods.
  2. Separate brand searches from broader queries and new enquiries from repeat contacts.
  3. Track costs, unique enquiries, qualified leads and paid sales separately.
  4. For a long sales cycle, follow a group of enquiries through to the outcome rather than comparing this month’s spending with payments from older customers.
  5. Allow for multiple touchpoints: someone may see an ad, read an article and return directly later.

See the formulas and worked example in our guide to cost per lead and customer acquisition cost. A Telegram click is a website action; an actual conversation and a sale require separate confirmation.

How an article can lead to a sales enquiry

Answer a question that comes up before a purchase, explain the limitations and show an example. Then offer a relevant service or quotation. An article about a fault should lead to equipment diagnostics, rather than a generic home page. A guide to choosing a supplier can lead to a website review and prioritised work plan.

The Drova Nevy case study illustrates search pages and geographical demand; IWH illustrates B2B searches and visits from AI assistants. These show how the channels work, not a controlled comparison of SEO and advertising profitability.

Where should your business start?

Send your website, region, priority service and a brief description of how your sales team handles an enquiry. We will compare demand, pages and the economics of acquisition. The result is a prioritised plan: what to fix before attracting more traffic and which channel to test first.

Questions and answers

Can articles alone bring customers?

Articles can attract visitors, but you also need relevant services, convincing pages, a working contact route and proper follow-up.

Does SEO guarantee free enquiries?

No. The work costs money, and rankings, visits and sales are not guaranteed.
